JAKARTA, Indonesia: The family of an Indonesian student killed in the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history said Wednesday they had sold property and cars to help fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher.
Partahi Lumbantoruan, 34, had been studying civil engineering at Virginia Tech for three years, vowing to come home only after receiving his doctorate, said his father, Tohom Lumbantoruan.
The victim — who died two semesters short of his goal — told the family he thought it was among the best technical schools in the world.
"We wanted him to succeed ... but he met a tragic fate," said Tohom Lumbantoruan, a 66-year-old retired army colonel, adding that even though his heart was broken, he accepted the tragedy as God's will.
He said he had sold property and cars to help come up with US$8,000 (€5,892.32) a semester for his son.
